What is the Cowichan Valley Regional District Accessibility Plan?

The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Accessibility Plan aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to access and participation in civic life, spaces, and services. It is part of the Accessible British Columbia Act, which requires all cities to create an accessibility plan.

Who is involved in shaping the plan?

The Accessibility Plan will be shaped by input from the community, including people with disabilities, their care partners, and family members.

What types of barriers will the Accessibility Plan address?

The Accessibility Plan will address barriers related to:

    • Built environment (e.g., CVRD-owned facilities and public spaces)
    • Transportation (e.g., transit service, bus stops, etc.)
    • Programs and services (e.g., recreation, civic services, etc.)
    • Information and communication (e.g., CVRD information, signage, etc.)
    • Employment (e.g., accommodations for CVRD jobs, etc.) and procurement (e.g., bill payment, RFPs, etc.)

What is the timeline for the Accessibility Plan?

    • March to April 2026: Project start-up
    • April to June 2026: Public engagement
    • June to August 2026: Draft the accessibility plan
    • August to September 2026: Final the accessibility plan
